Urgen Dorje Sherpa is a practising thangka artist who painted his family members ketag, which is the birth sign thangka or statue made within 49 days after someone passes away. At times, ketags are even commissioned by individuals before their death. An individual will go to an astrologer who will assign them appropriate deities based on their birth chart, with the belief that this helps minimise obstacles in transitioning consciousness from one physical body to the next after death. The ketag thus embodies a sacred object and is usually kept in the family’s prayer room.
