In her paintings, Madhumala Mandal depicts daily life and creates her own narratives, drawing inspiration from the stories her mother told. She also learned Mithila painting from her mother and remembers being told stories of fairs, the nights of Diwali, and working in felds. These stories enriched Mandal’s imagination, enabling her to introduce whimsical elements into her works, coupling them with elements traditionally used in Mithila painting. Mandal painted on the mud walls of her home before switching to paper, an additional medium in Mithila painting that came into use three decades ago.
