Historically commissioned by esoteric practitioners of Vajrayana Buddhism, such elaborate compositions were not intended for public viewing. Lok Chitrakar’s work in progress depicts the deity Hevajra and his consort Nair ātmy ā surrounded by a constellation of mandalas and other deities.

Known as yab-yum, the iconography represents a symbolic union of compassion and wisdom. This painting offers insight into the subtle and nuanced teachings of Tantric practices and the interrelationship between Buddhist philosophy and art. While these traditions originated in India, they were preserved and continue to flourish among Himalayan practitioners of Buddhism.
