Berta Cáceres was an internationally recognized Indigenous environmental activist in Honduras, who led numerous struggles against mega projects threatening Indigenous rights. She was shot dead in April 2016 in her home by armed intruders, including former army o fcers trained in the United States, in the midst of her vocal protest against the construction of the Agua Zarca, an American-backed hydroelectric dam on the Gualcarque river in Honduras. The impunity of her assasination made her a symbol of resistance to protect those at the frontlines protecting the environment, in particular women and Indigenous people, who are especially vulnerable to state violence and corporatefnanced paramilitarism. Her portrait has been represented in recent years across the world.
