Counter-mapping is a practice wherein communities who have been historically excluded from most maps are the ones authoring their own maps as opposed to those made by centralised bodies. Each culture has their own ways to record or represent space, proximity, and routes; it may be through movement, sound, or image/object making.
Each participant in this workshop was encouraged to explore any idea or visual or verbal language to produce their own unique map. The participants belonged to diverse geo-cultural backgrounds from Nepal, India, and Canada. The maps displayed here were drawn during the one-day virtual workshop, which was organised with the artist.
Map Making and Unmaking: Counter-mapping Workshop with Cian Dayrit, organized virtually on 30 January 2022 with support from Kathmandu Triennale 2077 and Saraf Foundation Grant.
