CHUDESNITSA
Single-channel video, 1' 39''
1957

Chudesnitsa is a short cartoon produced in the USSR in 1957, just after the massive corn campaign initiated by Nikita Khrushchev, who advocated for the transformation of large swathes of Soviet territory into arable land for corn cultivation. It was one of the largest human attempts at landscape transformation and led to questionable results. The cartoon narrates the adventures of various corn characters who used to live in the South but are now moving to the North, enriching the nation with their multiple uses. A happy corn couple are seen together with other vegetables, praising their exceptional value. Through a festive Russian folk dance, they transform into cornmeal, bread, clothes, plastics, and many other products.
